The author

Elsa Bergström

Elsa Bergström is a Swedish children’s novelist and former illustrator who insists on being honest with young readers about difficult subjects.

Her books run from the preschool-friendly to thornier middle-grade novels like Burrow’s End, the story of a band of rabbits displaced by a housing development. She refuses to write down to her audience.

She lives in a converted barn outside Visby, on Gotland, with three rescued sheepdogs and a saltwater aquarium. Among her influences is Astrid Lindgren.

Burrow’s End

A Warren Under the Hawthorn and a Chalk Kingdom in a Song

A novel that is honest about danger and loss: rabbits die, some scenes are frightening, and a few show wounds and blood. For readers 10 and up, and for reading aloud from 9.

Every morning, someone has to go first.
